The application to participate in the English Speaking Nation: Teacher Leadership Training (ESN:TLT) program: Lead Trainers (LTs)

Lead Trainers Program Activities

During the two program phases, major activities for Lead Trainers include:

  • Participation in the TESOL Teachers of English Leadership Institute (TESOL-TELI) 
  • Participation in the American Councils Successful Project Management Institute 
  • Providing trainings and mentorship to program’s 20 Regional Teacher Leaders assigned to each pair of Lead Teachers during May 2025-December 2025 with the understanding that extensive travel might be required 
  • Upon invitation, participation in professional teacher exchange for a total of three weeks in Uzbekistan to provide trainings to their peers in the assigned school with the understanding that extensive travel might be required. Teacher exchange costs will be covered by the program.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants selected to serve as Lead Trainers will be required to participate in all aspects of the program activities in order to become members of Uzbekistan’s Lead Trainers Corps. Competition for the English Speaking Nation: Teacher Leadership Training program is merit-based and open to individuals that meet the following criteria: 

  • Is a citizen of Uzbekistan and is currently living in Uzbekistan
  • Is currently a full-time teacher of English, teacher trainer or teacher of English as a Foreign Language in teacher training institution or a secondary school
  • Is an ESN core trainer, regional peer mentor, and/or alumnus/a of U.S. government-sponsored projects.
  • Has a minimum bachelor's degree
  • Has a minimum of three years of secondary school teacher training experience
  • Demonstrates good knowledge of written and spoken English
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continue providing teacher training for a minimum of three years after completion of the program
  • Is able to fully commit to the program’s all major activities listed in Program Activities section
  • Has submitted a complete application package (please see Application Checklist).

Applications not meeting the above technical eligibility requirements will not be forwarded to the selection committee.

Current American Councils employees and consultants and their immediate family members (spouses, parents, children, and siblings) are not eligible to compete in any American Councils-administered grant programs, either as individuals or as the responsible party representing an institutional applicant.

Selection Process and Criteria

The English Speaking Nation: Teacher Leadership Training program in Uzbekistan is conducted as a merit-based open competition. After the deadline, all eligible applications will be reviewed by a panel in Uzbekistan. Selected semi-finalists might be invited to participate in a virtual or in-person interview in Tashkent conducted by a bi-national committee of specialists, and U.S. embassy representatives. American Councils staff provides administrative support only and will not vote in the final selections.

The applicants will be selected based on the following criteria (not in order of importance):

  • Professional and educational experience and achievements
  • Demonstrated leadership potential
  • Preparedness (including maturity, flexibility, and ability to function independently) for participation in an intensive training program
  • Demonstrated commitment to conduct extensive trainings in Uzbekistan for their peers including for the ones based in remote regions
  • Demonstrated commitment to establish and maintain communities of practice to integrate innovative teaching practices in the larger educational communities
  • Potential to influence teaching and learning practices within educational communities in remote or rural areas of Uzbekistan
  • English language skills adequate to conduct a full training course in English, as well as to develop training materials and action plans.

The application process is competitive, as is the post-selection process. Due to the volume of applications received, American Councils will not forward explanations to those applicants that were not chosen as program finalists. Please see the Program timeline for additional details.

Lead Trainers Program Benefits

The selected Lead Trainers will receive: 

  • Travel, local hotel, and meal reimbursement for travel to/from their place of residence for program related trainings; 
  • Travel reimbursement while conducting training activities for RTLs; 
  • Upon satisfactory completion of all trainings, a TESOL-TELI certificate; 
  • Membership in Uzbekistan prestigious Lead Trainers Corps;

General Application Instructions and Checklist

To be considered for the Lead Trainer position in ESN:TLT, please submit a complete application packet by February 10, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. (Uzbekistan time) at the address: http://ais.americancouncils.org/esn

  • Incomplete applications submitted in hard (paper) copy or by fax will not be accepted (please see Application Checklist for application requirements);
  • Unless otherwise noted, please answer all questions in English;
  • If a question does not apply to you, please enter N/A (not applicable);
  • Include country and city codes before all telephone and fax numbers; 
  • There is a limit of attachments per question; if more than the requested amount is submitted, the application may be disqualified;
  • Additional materials (such as student work or handouts) should NOT be included; 
  • Materials that require technical equipment (such as audio or videotapes) will not be reviewed by the selection committee;
  • Please note that duplicate applications submitted both via email and online application system will immediately be disqualified from the competition. 

Application Checklist

A complete application packet includes:

  • A signed copy of the DISCLAIMER: PRIVACY PROLICY/CONSENT FOR PERSONAL DATA PROCESSING
  • A typed APPLICATION FORM with all answers and two essays 
  • A signed copy of the APPLICATION CERTIFICATION STATEMENT 
  • A copy of the applicant’s DIPLOMA(S)/CERTIFICATES and their English translations if not in English
  • A copy of the applicant’s LOCAL PASSPORT
  • A resume written in English that is no more than two pages long (please see the sample)
  • A recent passport-size photograph of the applicant

The application packet, should be received by American Councils via online submission no later than February10, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. (Uzbekistan Time).
